Green Methanol

Northern Green Fuels Oy's Green Methanol combines three distinct technologies to achieve over 86% reduction in GHG emissions compared to fossil-based methanol. It's a critical step toward a more sustainable future in Finland and globally.

Biomass Gasification
A renewable biogenic carbon source. Gasification extracts carbon from biomass as the first step in green methanol production.

Electrolytic Hydrogen

  • The plant includes a renewable electricity-powered electrolyzer to separate hydrogen and oxygen from water
  • Sized based on oxygen demand from gasification, eliminating the need for separate oxygen production
  • Renewable energy—such as wind and solar—is used to generate green hydrogen

Methanol Synthesis
Carbon and hydrogen are combined to create renewable methanol. Biogenic carbon and electrolytic hydrogen are synthesized into green methanol.

Target Users for Green Methanol
Growing demand in marine transport, the chemical industry, and thermoplastics.
Benefits include:

  • Up to 86% CO₂ reduction
  • 1/3 lower production costs than traditional e-methanol
  • No reliance on subsidies
  • Rapidly growing maritime market
  • NeF’s unique production concept

Production and Distribution
Green Methanol will be distributed by rail to ports, ensuring efficient and environmentally friendly logistics.
